External DNA Audit Program

When you schedule an audit with NFSTC, you can be assured of a top quality audit team, complete, accurate and timely reports and exceptional customer service.

Audit Features

  • Use of the “Quality Assurance Audit for Forensic DNA and Convicted Offender DNA Databasing Laboratories” audit document approved by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), issue date 07/04 (Rev. #6).
    Note:  Beginning July 1, 2009, the “Quality Assurance Standards for DNA Databasing Laboratories” and the “Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories” audit documents, approved by the FBI will be used.
  • NFSTC Auditors have successfully completed the FBI-sponsored DNA Auditor Training class.
    Note:  As of July 1, 2009, all NFSTC DNA Lead auditors must have successfully completed the FBI-sponsored DNA Auditor Training class held at the NFSTC April 20-21, 2009, unless given written permission by the NFSTC DNA Technical Manager.
  • Technical Auditors who are currently qualified DNA analysts
  • Audit teams and audit duration scaled to meet laboratory staff size
  • Each audit is headed by a Lead Auditor who has considerable experience in auditing
  • Audit document checklist completed in compliance with NDIS requirements
  • Reports are reviewed for consistency in interpretation before issuance
  • Completed audit documents provided to the laboratory management upon completion of the NFSTC review process
  • Free of all charges to the audited laboratory
  • Laboratories are eligible to be scheduled for external DNA audits biennially.
