Automation and enhanced technology have significantly advanced the Human Genome Project. With the miniaturization of techniques and instrumentation, as well as the automation of laboratory processing and analysis, forensic science is entering a new era. Implementation of these methods will assist laboratories in reducing backlogs of offender and casework samples and improve turnaround time.

Microfabrication techniques can be applied to the DNA analysis process, which includes extraction, amplification, and characterization. Research is ongoing to develop forensic methods for microchip capillary electrophoresis, microarrays and miniature thermal cyclers.
