DNA Database Hits

Home > Course Resources > CODIS > DNA Database Hits

DNA database hits were very rare events until the late 1990s. A combination of the maturity of the CODIS software, adoption of STR technology, and availability of funding has resulted in a significant increase in the number of hits.06 Considerable funding has been made available nationally through the National Institute of Justice, as well as through state budgets.

As of 2005, there are in excess of 10,000 DNA database hits resulting from searches using CODIS.07 More than a thousand of these hits are between states, linking unsolved forensic profiles to convicted offenders from other states or to forensic cases from other states. There have been numerous cases where a DNA database search provided the break in a high profile rape or homicide case. This demonstrates the effectiveness of DNA database searches in providing investigative leads in unsolved cases.
