Programs

To provide the justice community with the latest research and tools to enhance public safety, NFSTC develops and facilitates programs for a variety of agencies including the National Institute of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance and units of the military.

The following programs are administered by NFSTC:

  • The Forensic Technologies Center of Excellence (FTCoE) – One of four centers of excellence created by the National Institute of Justice, NFSTC is the only center focused on forensic research and development.
  • National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) -The first NamUsnational repository for missing persons and unidentified decedent records where the public and law enforcement can work together to solve cases.
  • Forensic Information Data Exchange (FIDEX) – Based on the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), FIDEX facilitates the sharing of information among forensic investigators, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, crime laboratories, and the courts.
  • Field Investigation Drug Officer (FIDO)  The FIDO program empowers law enforcement agencies to conduct preliminary drug analyses in the field, substantially reducing the caseload on crime laboratories and increasing efficiency throughout the justice system.
  • E-Crime Awareness Tools -To enhance law enforcement officers’ ability to solve computer crimes, NFSTC provides ongoing technology support for the NIJ’s Electronic Crime Partnership Initiative (ECPI).
  • Quality Documents Program -Provides a toolkit of generic Quality Documents that can be utilized by laboratories to develop and implement a quality system. Reviewed by a panel of Quality Assurance Managers for scope, accuracy and applicability.
  • Forensic Services Review Project –This comprehensive review process provides critical guidance to help laboratories improve productivity and meet the increasingly stringent demands required of today’s forensic service providers.
