E-Crime Awareness

Forging the Next Generation of Forensic Science

The digital revolution not only empowers citizens with new ways to communicate and stay connected, it offers predators new opportunities for committing crimes. From child exploitation to identity theft, e-crimes are a rapidly growing threat to the public safety. To help the criminal justice community meet the challenge of e-crime, NFSTC participated in a variety of initiatives to advance the discipline of digital forensics.

As part of the continuing effort to support NIJ’s E-Crime Program and the E-Crime Awareness Tools Project, NFSTC has:

  • Participated in Electronic Crime Partnership Initiative (ECPI) working group meetings to support NIJ E-Crime community awareness and outreach efforts
  • Attended and supported NIJ E-Crime program review meetings
  • Supported NIJ and ECPI Awareness & Outreach strategic planning
  • Provided ongoing technology support for NIJ and ECPI E-Crime awareness events and symposiums

From the Courtroom to the Combat Zone

To provide the justice community with convenient training addressing the issues surrounding the use of digital evidence in trial proceedings, NFSTC supported the development of two guidebooks published by the National Institute of Justice, Digital Evidence in the Courtroom and Electronic Crime Scene Investigation: A Guide for First Responders – Edition 2.

In addition, NFSTC delivered training programs for military service members that provide the knowledge necessary to exploit sensitive sites to identify, collect and preserve digital evidence.  This forensic intelligence could prove crucial to detecting and deterring terrorist threats and securing the homeland.
