NFSTC’s CSI Night 2013: VIP event highlighted forensic technology

On Wednesday, February 27, NFSTC hosted CSI Night 2013, bringing together business and technology leaders, law enforcement and military personnel from around Tampa Bay for business networking and a behind-the-scenes look at technology advancements impacting today’s forensic science industry. CSI Night was an invitation-only event at NFSTC’s Largo, Florida facilities and featured a Technology Showcase with sponsors from around the forensic marketplace, as well as opportunities for hands-on demonstrations to get up-close with the technology and techniques on display.

Guests enjoyed a VIP look inside NFSTC’s training facilities and mobile forensic laboratory. The event highlighted some of the most advanced technology in forensics, most notably laboratory techniques that are going into the field through mobile, field-purposed devices to support law enforcement, military, border patrol and other groups responsible for public safety and national security.

The Technology Showcase featured emerging technology and techniques including:

  • Alternate light sources
  • DNA
  • Mobile forensics laboratory
  • Mobile media exploitation
  • Standoff laser detection
  • Improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
  • Biometrics
  • Field detection of chemicals and explosives

CSI Night 2013 was well-received within the local community, garnering support from organizations such as the Pinellas County Economic Development Council, Tampa Bay Innovation Center, Tampa Bay Chapter of NDIA and the Florida Federal Contractors Association. About 150 guests attended the event and the response was overwhelmingly positive. One guest remarked “The NFSTC evening was very enlightening. It definitely was a mental awakening experience. It makes you realize what advancements have been made in a very short time and how small technology has become in your field.”
