NFSTC was recognized by PR News with a 2012 PR News Award for NonProfit Communications in the Employee/Internal Communications category. The PR News awards recognize excellence in communications in a variety of industries nationwide. Winners were announced on March 15th at the Press Club in Washington, D.C.
NFSTC’s entry, the ‘NFSTC Internal Communications Renovation’ was a project launched in early 2011. The organization had experienced a significant increase in staff over a relatively short period of time, and it became clear that the internal communications strategies were no longer as effective as they could be.
A survey of staff revealed that monthly staff meeting content was not always relevant, and sometimes too detailed or redundant and the meetings were too long. In addition, the company’s intranet (myNFSTC) received consistent traffic thanks to its forms and tools; however, it wasn’t being used for regular news.
To streamline communications, the NFSTC communications team made the intranet the focal point of daily and weekly news and information including human resources news, on-site visitors and a weekly audio message from the CEO.
The revamped staff meetings, now held quarterly, have become an opportunity for open Q&A with executives and big picture topics, and project-based details are shared at smaller kick-off meetings. Weekly news updates provide NFSTC staff with the information they need for the upcoming week every Friday in their email in-box. A secondary, but very positive effect of the new program is that staff time spent on ineffective meetings has dropped by 300 hours per quarter and the intranet has become the go-to central communications vehicle.
